Dealing with City Hall needs to be easier. I discovered this when I organized the paving of Cummings Street by bringing my neighbors together and presenting a petition. In doing this, we were successful in getting one of the last unimproved streets in the St. James Park area resurfaced.
As your City Commissioner, I will fight red tape and be YOUR advocate at City Hall.
As a youth coach for 12 years, I understand the vital importance of our parks and youth activities.
I will keep that focus if elected to the
City Commission.
Birmingham has wonderful amenities, including great shopping and award-winning dining - we shouldn’t let parking or traffic issues make us forget that fact.
These are solvable issues if we work together - the finger-pointing and posturing must stop.
Dear Neighbor,
My name is Anthony Long. I'm a candidate for Birmingham City Commission during the upcoming November 7th election.
I’ve had the privilege of living in Birmingham for 28 years. I’ve raised my two sons here, with my oldest having just graduated from Seaholm High School and my younger son having started ninth grade earlier this fall. Throughout my sons’ time within Birmingham Public Schools, I’ve coached many youth sports leagues, and have been involved in the BCS Proud Dad’s Club at Covington, where I ran the Eat and Run program. Through these activities, I’ve had the opportunity to meet many of you and discuss how Birmingham continues to evolve and change.
As a resident, I’ve been engaged in helping improve our city. I spearheaded a petition drive and worked with the city commission to repave Cummings Street. The street was the last unimproved roadway in that square mile area and had pooling water and large potholes at the edges. The result was a vast improvement to the area, property values, and safety of the residents.
Professionally, I’ve been a licensed, practicing attorney for more than 27 years. I have a bachelor’s degree in economics and management from Albion College and earned a Juris Doctorate from Michigan State Law School (formerly Detroit College of Law). Currently, I serve as Firm General Counsel at Howard & Howard Attorneys PLLC, where I handle all legal affairs for the firm.
For the past few years, I have been talking to my neighbors about the challenges the city faces, and I’ve realized many of us have the same concerns. Rather than just talking, I would like the opportunity to represent the voices of the community and help address the concerns I’ve heard time and time again, including property taxes, parking downtown, city sewers/flooded basements and new development. During my twelve-year tenure as a manager and coach of my sons' sports teams, I taught my players about fairness, trust, teamwork and problem-solving. In my twenty-six years as a practicing attorney, my clients and firm have relied upon me to represent them, advocate on their behalf, solve their problems and seek a fair resolution to their dispute.
If elected, my priorities will be the issues that matter to you, my neighbors, and leveraging my background, legal expertise, and pulse on the community and its residents. I will work to ensure the City of Birmingham remains one of the best cities in Michigan for families, businesses, and tourists.
I believe it is imperative that the voices of all community members are heard. Over the next few months, I’ll continue to discuss the issues that matter most to you – the constituents of the Birmingham City Commission.
In the September 2021 issue of Downtown Publications, the editorial team endorsed Anthony Long for Birmingham City Commission.
